Moonlight Resonance special interview
Lam Fung the good guy
Fung says, the “Goon Ga Jai” (guy who manages the household – his nickname in the series) Gam Wing Ho in Moonlight Resonance is a “larn good person” (don’t know how to translate this!).
What is a “larn good person”?
From our understanding, it’s someone who always put others ahead of themselves, they don’t know how to say no and would rather sacrifice themselves. Simply, it’s an unbelievably good person.
Even though he’s a “larn good person”, he has flaws. Sandwiched in between grandmother Yu Gwan Lai (Lee Heung Kam) and Ho Ma (LSK), he will become long-winded and always nagging, hoping to please both sides. When facing his brothers and sisters, he likes to stick his nose in everything, and often conflict with others to protect them. Seeing the girl he likes dating someone else, he would rather sacrifice himself to make her happy.
“Goon Ga Jai”, on the surface he seems like he’s managing everything right, but in reality because of his good guy personality, he often put himself in difficult situations, making things hard for himself.
If you can choose, would you be a “larn good person”, or a normal person who is a bit bad?
Difficult to be a good person
Being a good person is difficult. Being a 100% good person is even more difficult. But in TV series this type of good person character often appears. In “Moonlight Resonance”, this good guy is played by Lam Fung. In his eyes, a good person is, “in past TV series, a good person must be good from start to finish. The person is also good from inside out, defying norms. A “larn good person” is someone who doesn’t seem to be from real life.” It’s difficult to be a good person, luckily Gam Wing Ho has his moments of being petty, bad temper, and arguing with others. This gives his character another dimension, and gives Fung a place to start to portray this character. “I feel Gam Wing Ho has his own views, he is a good guy who has personality. He’s very real, so when I portray him I also feel he’s very real, making people feel that it’s possible that a guy next door can be like this, like a neighbour.”
From Fung’s description, Gam Wing Ho can be nagging, act on impulse and always repeat things. He has a good heart, and likes to defend the disadvantaged. It’s also because he can’t let things go, so many things can be resolved (because he has to get to the bottom of it). When trying to capture his character, Fung used his character’s background (while growing up) to understand Gam Wing Ho. “This time the script described in detail each of the character in the Gam family. So I don’t need to decide myself. I only have to read the script and I can already put myself in character. So a good script is very important.”
Relationship between grandmother & grandson
In HOG, Fung portrays Alfred who mainly develops the (love) relationship storyline. He develops an unforgettable love story with Sheung Joi Sum. It’s the complete opposite in “Moonlight”, as most of his scenes are focused on the family. He’s known as “Goon Ga Jai” for a reason. “In the series I am the arbitrator in the middle, trying to please both sides.” Gam Wing Ho is his grandmother’s favourite and he knows it, so he uses this advantage to stop the conflict between both sides. “Grandmother loves me the most and I understand her situation the most. Towards the end grandma wants to do a lot for the family, and hopes that I will help her. The greatest wish in my heart is to have the whole family together. So I really hate Michelle Yim’s character, from the start till the end I hate her! I also don’t like Jo Pa (Ha Yu) because he caused the family to be separated. But I also respect him as a father, but only because Ho Ma wants me to respect him. Even though I am not the eldest son (Moses is), but I am the only man in Ho Ma’s side of the family, so I must set a good example.”
Grandma’s love for Goon Ga Jai extends to real life, as Lee Heung Kam has said that she gets on very well with Fung. She admits he’s a “good grandson”. “I feel that she’s quite an interesting person and has a young heart. She doesn’t get offended easily. Sometimes we talk about young people’s leisure activities and she will go and learn immediately. When talking about playing video games she will say, “I used to love playing them too!” She’s full of energy and quick minded. Think about this, I have watched her movies since I was young, now I actually have the opportunity to interact with her. When chatting I also discovered she likes to travel to find good things to eat, so we’re quite compatible.” Fung says it’s very comfortable being with Kam Jeh (sister), he can learn many things from her, both in life and in acting. “She reminded me that you need to stay cheerful.”
Willing to let go
Do you remember in HOG, Alfred two timed and caused great pain to Sheung Joi Sum’s heart? In the end it was a sad ending. Even though there aren’t as many relationship developments for Fung this time, but the intricate relationship between Gam Wing Ho and Yu So Sum (Linda Chung) is developing even in the early episodes. They were good friends since a young age, then Sum went to England for her studies. She wrote a card which contained a ten year promise and gave it to him. After she finished her studies and returned to HK, the two plus Shun (Bosco Wong) begins a triangular relationship. This time Fung is dedicated to one person and not a two timer. “Gam Wing Ho feels that Yu So Sum is a good girl, and doesn’t feel he is good enough for her. In terms of relationships, he feels inferior.”
So towards the end of this relationship, Gam Wing Ho would rather let go, because he doesn’t want to keep dragging it on, plus he truly believes a friendship can develop between a girl and a guy. “Of course Gam Wing Ho likes Yu So Sum a lot, and would really want to care and protect her. If she fights with her boyfriend and is unhappy, he would hope that they can be happy together again, and would not take advantage of the situation. Actually this is quite “Por Ma!” (literally being a grandma – not being decisive). But Gam Wing Ho only wants to give everything to resolve things, everything he does he wants to make his family happy, his friends happy, the people around him happy, even if this means he will be disadvantaged it doesn’t matter.”
Fung says Gam Wing Ho is not a great (self-sacrificing) person, it’s only his character to always put others first before himself.
The story teller
The reporter believes Fung is a good story teller.
Because during the interview, he often gives intriguing hints to the storyline, so after everyone hears it they want to know what happens.
Speaking about the most unforgettable scene in the series, he says he has never filmed a series with so many unforgettable scenes. Finally he talks about a scene where it was Ho Ma’s birthday, the seven siblings all acted as the opposite sex to celebrate. “I’ve been in the entertainment industry for many years but I’ve never played a woman. This was the first time I had to wear high heels… wah! It’s hard work to wear high heels! I was over six feet tall with heels. A woman who is that tall is quite scary!” That scary? Would like to see it!
Speaking of the most outstanding in the series, the grandma who pretty much scolds everyone she sees, Fung can’t help but reveal a little, “She’s the smartest!” So how is she smart?
Speaking of the characters, he will say, “It’s quite exciting towards the end, besides me, a few characters’ temperaments will change. Sometimes they will be good and sometimes they will be bad. You will only know what happens in the end.” So… who will turn good and who will turn bad?
Everything is revealed in halves, want to know more!
Fung, you’re so bad!
