God, please give him more personal time

Being a busy person from Hong Kong, one needs good time management skills to get everything done. So when Fung doesn’t have enough time to complete something, his first thought would be to have better time management.

And then, he said something that noone can believe is true.

“Dating? I don’t even have enough time to sleep, who can I go out with?”

“Since I’ve entered the entertainment industry in 1999, I have never been on holidays. Does filming and performing abroad count?” Can’t say much to that, that is not a normal person’s life.

Finally, when Fung signed with EEG, he has some time to record and promote his album. In his eyes that is already more relaxing. We realise that God needs to give Fung more time, and this God is not “God”, it’s TVB.

He finally got his time because he has been a believer (faithful).

Signing with EEG was a perfect opportunity for Fung. The truth is he signed with a record company back in 2001, but that was only a signature, he didn’t release an album. Amongst TVB’s leading actors, it’s clear that Fung is the most talented performer (knows how to sing and dance) even though he is also underrated. (Kevin Cheng doesn’t count, as he was originally a singer.)

[IN MAG]: This is the first time you’ve released an album, how do you feel?
[FUNG]: After waiting for so many years I can finally release an album. In the past I’ve recorded many songs, but those were TV series theme or sub-theme songs. Now I finally have my own songs. I feel a little nervous as I have set high standards for myself. I was still filming a series when I was recording the first six songs on the album. It was really difficult to find time to record, so we even used my sleeping time to record. The producer was very good, he gave me time to finish recording the other 4 songs after filming finished. Even though we didn’t have a lot of time, it still ran smoothly.

[IN MAG]: How long have you waited to release an album?
[FUNG]: I’ve always wanted to be a singer. During the years, everytime I bump into some relatives/friends they always ask me, “When are you releasing an album?” I didn’t even know how to answer that question. So I thank EEG and TVB for giving me this chance to realise my dream, and hope there will be more chances to collaborate in the future.

[IN MAG]: You had a contract with a record company before, how come you didn’t release an album?
[FUNG]: Because I had been filming TV series since the beginning, and didn’t even have time to go on holidays. Every day I was working, so after a while, I didn’t learn anything new, didn’t have time to digest the knowledge I had absorbed previously, so the brain was blocked (congested?). Being a television actor, the audience does not know how busy we are. Luckily, last year my management can organise some time for me to work on the album, so I don’t have to film a new series until now.

[IN MAG]: So the time to record was organised by the company, and you didn’t ask for holidays?
[FUNG]: Ask for holidays? Can I? But as a TV actor would you rather have lots of work, than waiting for your opportunity at home? You decide!

After working continuously, even the most interesting work will become boring. Fung had filmed many series since he entered the entertainment industry, the path from cameos to leading actor is a difficult one. So what about the future?

[IN MAG]: Are you used to the life of a busy actor?
[FUNG]: The truth is, no one wants to get used to a difficult lifestyle/working very hard. I entered this industry when I was 18 and this is my first job. All of my knowledge came from working at TVB, from acting to how to communicate/deal with others. I can use this knowledge for the rest of my life. I don’t really know why I chose to be an actor at the time, I just wanted to test myself. I didn’t expect that I would still be working as an actor now. So working hard is not a big issue for me, when I joined TVB I expected life to be difficult. Don’t you have to do the hard yards in every job? Like for you as a journalist, it is also difficult. It only depends on which level you would like yourself to be at.

[IN MAG]: Would you consider acting as a job for the rest of your life?
[FUNG]: It’s difficult to say. A few years ago I would’ve answered differently. In the past I have thought of changing careers, maybe help out in the family business or start my own. But then I thought, everyone I know is from the entertainment industry. If I need to break out into a new area that would take a few years, and doesn’t seem necessary. Now my thinking is, even if I won’t be in front of the screen, I would be working in an area related to the entertainment industry. Just a change of position, but still within the same area.

[IN MAG]: When you joined the entertainment industry, did you have any other choices besides joining the TVB acting class?
[FUNG]: Yes, at the time I could almost become a singer. After all these years I finally have the chance so I am very happy. Between singing, movies and television, I am most familiar with singing. I had enjoyed singing since I was young and took singing lessons. But after filming television for so long I had almost forgotten. So now I will have to practice, especially when I’m releasing my own album and people pay money to purchase it. You have to take it seriously. This time I’m quite happy with the result.
